Earlier this week, my friend Todd asked me about the workload in a class that he has to take next quarter. Todd started graduate school a couple of quarters after me so while he is preparing for the autumn quarter, I'm spending my time writing blog posts because I graduated.

Last night I installed Adobe Premiere Pro CS5 on my computer with a 64-bit processor. This version was designed specifically for a 64-bit operating system. To figure out the difference between the CS5 64-bit version and the CS4 32-bit version, I loaded a four minute project file in each version and exported the project into an MPEG-4 file. After a couple of runs for each version, the CS5 version exported the project in two minutes eleven seconds while the CS4 version did the export is seven minutes 15 seconds.

While a bag to carry your laptop, a computer and an internet connection are necessary equipment you must have to survive in graduate school, no one tells you a power strip and an extension cord are just as necessary. Very few laptops have the battery capacity to last the entire four hour class time.

I'm studying. From this chair, I've got access to all of the University's libraries as well as libraries around the world. I'm reading an article whose paper version is at another library on campus. I'm just too lazy to walk to that library.
